This book, which consists of the essential
part
of my thèse d’Etat and is the result of considerable fieldwork
undertaken
during a period of eight years, aims at accounting for dialectal
differences
recognised at phonological level within the Songhai language group. The
research is based on approximately forty preliminary descriptions
elaborated
from a synchronic point of view and whose results are presented at the
beginning of the analysis. The phonologic and dialectological dynamics
of these
languages is highlighted: a classification of dialects in ten units is
presented and serves as the framework of the description of the changes
(each
unit groups dialects); it is the one used by specialists today.
This classification is treated in a manner
that
takes into account principles of diachronic phonology developed by
Martinet and
Haudricourt, but the framework of analysis also integrates a specific
conceptualization in which a particular organization of interrelated
structures, a distinction between ‘large structure’ and ‘straight
structure’,
the recognition of a mechanism between the phonetic space and the
structural
space leads to obtaining a useful articulation for a beginning of a
dynamic
approach of linguistic change facts.
