Note: with time passing by and people retiring, this research group is now history. Nevertheless, the results reported here remain, and contact with the last "survivor", Philippe Pognonec, is still possible.

A fine balance between cell proliferation and differentiation is necessary for the harmonious functioning of a whole organism. There is a constant modulation of gene expression in order to maintain this balance in the different tissues of an organism and in response to different conditions encountered.

We are interested in all mechanisms used by cells to achieve their goals, that is: divide, differentiate, and adequately respond to stimuli. Our investigations in these fields lead us to also participate in the understanding of the processes that result in the disruption of this exquisite equilibrium, which can ultimately translate into the development of cancers or immune defficiencies, among other diseases.

Our initial interests were in the USF and Ets2 transcription factors, particularly in their roles in proliferation and differentiation processes. Other interests of the group encompass therapeutic oriented projects, such as controlled and inducible apoptosis and the development and/or improvement of expression systems. Our expertise in the domain of molecular differentiation as well as retroviral expression allowed a collaborative effort with the biotech company Proskelia in order to investigate factors that may have to do with osteoblastic differentiation. A more recent path that we entered deals with cellular response to cadmium, an environmental pollutant. More specifically, we are interested in the molecular mechanisms activated after exposure to this toxic agent, as well as in the development of alternative strategy to help cells resist to cadmium toxicity. Finally, we also invest some of our time in the development of stand-alone software solutions in order to simplify the everyday lab organization. These software are made available to the academic community free of charge.
